Málaga has become one of the most visited cities in Spain, and deservedly so: museums everywhere, a city beach ten minutes from the centre, a lovely pedestrianised old town and an August fair unlike any other. The city council's tourism department maintains an official city guide with up-to-date opening times and listings, worth checking before you organise the trip.
What hasn't improved at the same rate is the souvenir offering. Between fridge magnets and fans that break before you get home, it's easy to come back with something that ends up in a drawer.
So this guide follows one very simple rule: it has to get used. Here are nine ideas to take home from Málaga — or to give to whoever put you up there — all with illustrations drawn by hand by Malena and exclusive to illustrArte.
If you're coming in August, you're coming to the fair
Worth knowing before you pack: the Feria de Málaga 2026 runs from 15 to 22 August, and the 19th is a local public holiday, the central day.
The fair happens in two quite separate settings, and it's worth understanding the difference. During the day, it's in the historic centre: Calle Larios, squares with live music, verdiales, tapas and well-chilled Cartojal. At night, everything moves to the fairground at Cortijo de Torres, where the casetas stay open until dawn. Two different plans, two different outfits and two very different levels of heat.
One more thing: on the night of the 14th there are fireworks by the port, best seen from La Malagueta, Huelin or the Gibralfaro castle. It's worth checking the official Feria de Málaga programme before organising the trip, since the timetable is only published a few weeks ahead.
1. The Málaga tote bag
We'll start with the one that carries the city's name. The Málaga tote bag is 43 x 43 cm, made from 400 gsm polyester printed on both sides, with 60 cm handles, so it sits over the shoulder without digging in.
It's the most practical souvenir on the list: it works for the Atarazanas market in the morning, the beach in the afternoon and getting home with everything you've bought along the way.

2. The stainless steel insulated bottle
In Málaga in August this isn't an indulgence, it's logistics. Our 500 ml stainless steel bottle keeps water cold for up to 24 hours and hot for up to 12. It's 28 cm tall and fits in any bag.
It works just as well climbing up to the Alcazaba at midday — the climb is harder than it looks from below, and in summer it's open until 20:00 — as it does in a caseta at three in the morning. There are several designs, so it's an easy gift to get right.

3. The microfibre beach towel
Málaga is one of the few capitals where you can go from a museum to the sand on foot. La Malagueta, Pedregalejo, El Palo: the beach is part of the plan, not a separate excursion.

If you want a souvenir that takes up no room and always looks right, this is the one. The «Pepa» mulberry silk scarf (66 x 66 cm) ties in your hair when the sun beats down, round your neck when it cools off in the early hours, or to the handle of your bag simply because it looks lovely.
It's also the easiest present to bring back: it weighs nothing and fits in any gap in the case.

6. The Cádiz tote bag, for everyday
Lighter than the Málaga one and with a different purpose. The Cádiz tote bag is 135 gsm cotton (38 x 42 cm), holds up to 5 kg and folds away into the bottom of a suitcase until you need it.
It's the one you take to the shops back home, when the trip is over but the souvenir is still in use.

Same idea as the Granada one, different size. The Seville pouch is 25 x 26 cm, waterproof and printed on both sides. This one is a proper travel wash bag: a full set of toiletries fits.

Three tips for shopping in Málaga without regretting it
- Be wary of whatever repeats on every corner. If you've seen it in five shops in the centre, it isn't a Málaga souvenir: it's a generic souvenir with Málaga written on it.
- Think about the luggage going home. Whatever folds, weighs little and doesn't break wins every time. Large ceramics are beautiful right up until you check them in.
- Choose something that gets used. A bag, a bottle or a mug is still in your life a year later. A figurine isn't.
Málaga is best enjoyed on foot, calmly and carrying little. Let the souvenir you take home follow the same logic. 💃
